Cape porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis) – South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

The African savannah after dark, surrounded by the sounds of all manner of unseen creatures, is a most exhilarating place. I spotted this elusive porcupine crossing a pool of water and was immediately drawn to its reflection. Listening carefully, I could hear the gentle rattling of its quills. Night-time photography presents its own set of challenges, so a fast lens and steady hand are certainly the photographer’s friends at these moments.
